March: Catastrophic Molt: It's Not As Bad As It Sounds (U.S. National Park Service)

Once a year penguins go through what is called a ‘catastrophic molt’ where they lose and replace all their feathers at once. It can take weeks, and because they’re not as waterproof whilst they are molting they are mostly confined to the beachside. Our favourite bit is that they get LOADS of eating done just before so they are nice and tubby to last during the molt. Which means once a year this adorable ‘bald and fat’ stage exists 🥹 | Drusillas Park

Did you know? 🦭 Hawaiian monk seals go through a “catastrophic molt” once a year, shedding the top layer of their skin and fur all at once, kind of like a full-body reset! 🦭🐬 These incredible animals are federally protected, which means it’s important to never approach them. Always observe from a safe distance and let them rest peacefully in their natural habitat 🐚🐙 Every respectful encounter helps protect Hawaii’s unique marine life, so we can all keep admiring their beauty for generations

Cardinals typically molt once a year in late summer, after nesting season ends, to replace worn-out feathers. This process is usually unnoticeable because songbirds like cardinals shed and regrow a few feathers at a time. However, some cardinals, especially northern cardinals, may experience a "catastrophic molt" where they lose all their head feathers at once. This is considered normal and healthy. Appearance:Bald cardinals may appear shabby in August, but their new feathers will make them brig

Happy molt Monday from our penguins! Each year African penguins go through what is called a “catastrophic molt.” This is an annual process where they shed and regrow all their old feathers at once. The whole process typically happens over 2-4 weeks, to ensure their plumage remains waterproof and insulating for swimming and diving. #funny #penguin #molt #zoo #fun | Wildlife World Zoo

Do you know why penguins molt? 🐧 Once a year, penguins go through a process called molting, where they shed and replace all their feathers. Unlike many birds that lose feathers gradually, penguins experience what’s known as a “catastrophic molt.” During this time, they lose nearly all their feathers at once and can’t go into the water to feed, because their old feathers are no longer waterproof and their new ones haven’t fully grown in yet. This process usually lasts about two to four weeks, de

#notiffact #fakt

Here's a quick video update. For those who haven't experienced a molt watch, the pre-molt period is long. Without knowing Winny's exact age or molt history, I'm going in blind. Her molt could occur anytime between 10 days to 8 weeks. We're watching for signs such as shell color and thickness changes, mood changes, and different behaviors. So it's doubtful that it'll happen right away, but we'll be monitoring her progress. #winnythecrab #moltwatch

Factz Inomix on Instagram: "Why Molten Slag Explodes! 💥 What looks like a lava waterfall is actually high-temperature molten slag from a steel mill — heated to over 1,000°C. After cooling, it becomes reusable material for other industries… but there’s a dangerous secret you must know. Molten slag must never touch water, or it can trigger a massive explosion. Just like molten aluminum reacts violently when poured into water — the sudden conversion of water into steam causes the volume to expand

Cincinnati Zoo on Instagram: "Little blue penguin Embry just finished his annual molt while his buddy Faulty isn’t quite there yet! Little blue penguins experience a “catastrophic molt” that is totally normal. They’ll stay on land, fast for a couple of weeks, and grow fresh, waterproof feathers—basically, it’s a penguin glow-up! 🐧🤩"
