What Is Shell Structure In Architecture

This single-celled foraminifera is all kinds of fascinating. Sometimes called armored amoebae, forams build shells for themselves and then send out extensions of their cells through holes in the shell to move and feed. Therefore, it makes sense that they are called “foraminifera”, meaning the “hole-bearers”. The shell composition can vary with species but this one is made from calcium carbonate. When the foram dies, the soft body will decompose while the hard shell is often fossilized – there ar

This is another foraminiferan, but this one has a calcium-carbonate shell. I posted a different one with an organic shell yesterday, but this one builds a mineral shell, like an oyster. And yes, it’s a single-celled organism that can build a shell to hide inside. . The shell looks like an ammonite’s, and while it grows it leaves hundreds or even thousands of tiny holes so the cell can extend out to capture food and drag itself around. The name Foraminifera fits perfectly because it means “hole-b

USF College of Marine Science on Instagram: "🐚What can tiny, fragile shells tell us about past climates? A whole lot, according to Felipe Stanchak, CMS graduate student. Felipe studies foraminifera, small, calcareous shelled organisms that lived millions of years ago - as well as present day! When these foraminifera build their shell, they take in carbon and oxygen from the surrounding seawater. By sifting through old sediment cores, researchers can find these foraminifera and use them to under

What looks like a tiny “pirate eye” on the reef is actually one of the most fascinating organisms in the ocean. This is a foraminiferan, often nicknamed the pirate eye, and it’s among the largest single-celled organisms on Earth. Despite being just one cell, it builds an intricate shell and thrives on coral reefs, playing a quiet but important role in reef ecosystems. Filmed close-up to show its unique shape and texture — a reminder that the reef’s smallest residents can be just as mind-blowing
